Robin Class
Welcome to Robin Class!
Robin Class (Reception/Foundation 1)
The Robins are a small class of inquisitive 4- and 5-year-olds in their Reception year at The Ridgeway Primary School.
The children are all unique, develop at different rates and learn in their own way. This is something that is celebrated and nurtured by the adults who care for them in this close-knit school. Mrs McKenzie teaches us on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Mrs Salmon teaches us on Thursdays and Fridays (Currently on Maternity Leave). Robins are also lucky enough to have Mrs Cox and Miss Buxton supporting us for some of the week too.
As a school, we are passionate about child-directed, play-based learning. Adult directed learning is woven into the day to allow children to develop the broad range of skills needed to thrive. Children practise new ideas and skills; they are encouraged to take risks, use their imagination, communicate effectively, developed new vocabulary and solve problems whilst being supported by the adults in the setting or by other children.
Learning takes place in our spacious indoor and outdoor classroom across each of the 7 areas of learning in the Early Years Curriculum. These are:
Prime Areas:
- Personal, Social, Emotional, Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
Specific Areas:
- Mathematical Development
- Literacy Development
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Children learn best through practical and active experiences and quality interactions, so they develop knowledge and understanding of new concepts. Areas of our curriculum are linked through topic, where possible, to help children give meaning to their learning and become confident independent learners. Many of our topics are underpinned by books (either non-fiction, fiction or poems) and tasks are adapted to ensure that children are either challenged or supported as needed.

How can you help?
- Ask your child what they have been learning today at school - if they just say 'playing', ask them if they have used the water tray, made marks with chalk, spied through a magnifying glass, talked to a partner, counted loose parts etc.
- Please listen to your child read every day - little and often - it should be fun not a chore.
- Help them with their phonics and reading tricky words.
- Praise independence, good manners, turn taking and listening skills.
- Encourage learning maths using real-life contexts at home.
- Tell us about any learning they have achieved at home or complete a ‘Star Moment’ form and we can add this to their profiles.
- Let us know if you can spare an hour a week time to help out in our class!
- The school publishes a weekly newsletter that includes all the lovely learning that we have done.
